Rapper Prodigy Reacts To Michael Jackson’s Death From Behind Bars

Prodigy, one half of Infamous rap duo Mobb Depp, recently spoke with XXLMag.com to give his thoughts on Michael Jackson’s passing.

P, who is currently serving time behind bars for a gun conviction, apparently had a chance to catch Sunday night’s (June 28) BET Awards – a show that quickly became a MJ tribute with several artists, including host Jamie Foxx, paying respect to the late King of Pop. “Shout out to Jamie Foxx, he did a good job with the BET Awards,” P said.

One of the remarks Foxx made in particular struck a chord with the Queens rapper. “He said everybody used to dress like Michael Jackson when they was a little kid,” Prodigy noted, bringing up the time that Jay-Z exposed a photo of him as a child dressed up like MJ, in order to discredit the MC. “You know I like that part ’cause certain niggas ‘Oh yeah Prodigy had the ‘Beat It’ jacket on when he was eight years old,’ like tryna discredit me like there’s something wrong with that. Nah ain’t nothing wrong with that and everybody knows and it’s sad that Michael Jackson had to die but now everybody’s professing ‘oh I loved Michael Jackson when I was little too.’ Oh now it’s okay.”

“Rest in peace, Michael Jackson,” he added. “Cause I damn sure thought I was Michael when I was a little kid. I wanted to be Michael Jackson, I wanted to be a celebrity like Michael. He did a lotta things I ain’t agree with later on in life but overall that was a good muthafucka right there. That was an excellent person, with his music and what he contributed to the music world. Perfect, excellent.”

Papoose Implicated In 2006 Rikers Island Slashing Of 2 Inmates

A recent article in the New York Post has linked Brooklyn rapper Papoose to a 2006 slashing at Rikers Island jail.

According to an unnamed source, Papoose was pressured by members of the Bloods street gang to give a signal to inmates during a performance at Rikers, who intern initiated an attack on two prisoners. Papoose was at Rikers Island for a concert that was designated for low risk inmates. During the concert Papoose reportedly flashed a gang sign which lead to two men being slashed.

Papoose, born Shamele Mackie, demanded at the last minute that two of his friends, each incarcerated in different jails, be brought to see his concert in the George Motchan Detention Center's gym. The request was initially denied but after Papoose threatened to cancel the show, high ranking officials stepped in and allowed the transfer of the two inmates.

During the performance Papoose flashed Bloods signs, and inmates associated with the Bloods erupted in cheers. Suspected Bloods members slashed two prisoners in the face with razors when the performance ended.

This is the second incident at a prison involving Papoose in recent years. In May of 2008 Papoose attempted to smuggle a handcuff key into the prison where his fiance Remy Ma was being held in an attempt to break her out. Papoose vigorously denied theses claims.

In an interview with MTV in 2008 Papoose had this to say about the allegations. "That whole claim and that rumor is ridiculous. Ever since she's been incarcerated, I've been going to visit her consistently. I've always had my key chain that has the key to my truck, my crib. ... Everything that was on my key chain was always there [during my visits]. The [corrections officers have] always seen my key chain. This particular time, this one dude, I guess he had a bad day or something. One C.O. looked at it like, 'You can't bring this in here.' "

After this, Pap was asked to speak to the Warden, which he found to be too much. "It was a small key. I honestly don't think the shit could open handcuffs. [Sneak it to her] on Rikers Island? What are you gonna do with that? For me to give her a handcuff key, that's ridiculous. They put in the papers [that] I was trying to help her escape and all that. If that was true, I would have been arrested. It was just an excuse for them to do some of the foul things they did."

Neither Papoose nor his reps have yet to comment on the incident at Riker's Island or the NY Post article.

Tru Life Popped On First Degree Murder Charge

Gang members looking to avenge the shooting of a drug dealer stabbed two men -- one fatally -- in a Manhattan apartment building lobby last Monday (June 15), reports the New York Daily News.

At the time, it was believed that the the man was shot as part of an ongoing fight between Black (one of the men stabbed) and the brother of Latino rapper Tru Life.

Now, according to a report from VladTV.com, Tru Life may have been the man who knifed the slain man, and turned himself into police Tuesday night (June 23) on a first degree murder charge.

Investigators believe five men were waiting in parked cars outside the New York apartment building, jumping the two men when they stepped into the lobby just before 9:30 a.m.

The result, 30-year-old Jason Black and an unnamed 18-year-old man each suffered several stab wounds to their chests and faces. The 18-year-old died a short time later, while Black was listed in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital.

The attack is rumored to be in retaliation for a 4 a.m. shooting outside Pacha nightclub, wheres suspected drug dealer Michael Slater was shot in the abdomen and is listed in stable condition at Bellevue.

Brother Of Lower East Side Rapper Tru Life Wanted For Murder Of Teen And Injuring Another Man

Gang members looking to avenge the shooting of a drug dealer stabbed two men - one fatally - in a Manhattan apartment building lobby Monday, police sources said.
Investigators believe five men were waiting in parked cars outside the E. 26th St. building and jumped their victims when they stepped into the lobby just before 9:30 a.m., police said.

Jason Black, 30, and an 18-year-old man each suffered several stab wounds to their chests and faces, police said.

The teenager - whose name was not released - died a short time later, while Black is listed in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital.

"I moved here from Missouri yesterday," said Hannah Robbins, 21, who lives a block away. "I didn't expect to step outside on my first morning here and see someone almost dead."

The stabbing was in retaliation for a 4 a.m. shooting outside Pacha, a W. 46th St. nightclub, police sources said. Suspected drug dealer Michael Slater was shot in the abdomen and is listed in stable condition at Bellevue.

Investigators believe he was shot as part of an ongoing fight between Black and the brother of rapper Tru Life, a budding hip-hop star, police sources said.

No arrests have been made in either incident.

50 Wants To Bring Back Hardcore Hip-Hop

Polow Da Don and Timbaland were so excited about the project, they almost gave Fif tracks. But production from those two will more than likely pop up on Before I Self Destruct, due in September. The G-Unit General is warming the scene up before summer officially hits, dropping his new mixtape before the official product.

If you’re curious about the title, know that it’s not about a beef with one person in particular — this war angel is fed up with the watered-down music in hip-hop right now. It’s not what he adored growing up as a fan.

“What I fell in love with initially ain’t even in the muthafuckin’ art form anymore. It’s cool because there’s an opportunity for me to become [that] to a whole new generation … because of their age group, they’re not aware of it.

“Now I gotta shift the energy,” 50 added. “I gotta make them follow me. After they follow me, they’ll be able to make real hip-hop records and make them successful. I have to have a successful project with really good hip-hop music to make these people go, ‘OK, we can make [a real hip-hop album].’ I have to be successful to make the record companies go, ‘We can support this guy that wrote a rap album’ instead of feeling like ‘We need him to go on this record with Ne-Yo or Dream. Get somebody on there to do the hook.’ That’s the concept of what they feel they can present to the public and that’s not what the fuck I was going on when I started.”

50 is debuting the entire mixtape Tuesday (June 16) on Hot 97 with Funkmaster Flex then posting it on his Web site that night for free download. The Queens MC is also hiring new video directors — a different one for each clip — to come up with visuals for the mixtape.

“When I start writing music to my core, I’m talking about the way I came up, the way I was raised,” he explained. “That’s easy to me. Tell me to make a commercial pop record, a commercial hit record and that’s more difficult to me than to create concepts that people are excited about where I’m from.”

After War Angel, 50 says to look for Sincerely Southside, on which he’ll be rapping over some ’90s R&B hits, as well as a full G-Unit mixtape prior to the release of Before I Self Destruct.

“I write at a rapid pace,” he said. “I have binges. There’s points I’ll be in the studio … I’ve met moments when I’m there and unmotivated by production. Just there and unexcited about the whole sh–. Then there’s times when every beat that comes on, I have an idea.”

Tony Yayo Speaks Out Against Max B's Lawyer "Saluti"

Tony Yayo is disappointed to see friend and recording partner Max B go to jail. Max, born Charles Wingate, was found guilty of manslaughter, as well as eight other charges, last week in New Jersey. His sentencing is July 31.

Yayo said the trial went south before it even started, blaming his friend’s downfall on a January video blog, in which Max and his lawyer, Gerald M. Saluti, spoke about the case for more than six minutes. The two also were part of subsequent Internet interviews.

“It’s an unfortunate thing that happened to Max B,” Yayo told us. “He just had a kid. I fuck with Max. I fuck with French Montana. I think he had bad representation with his lawyer. What lawyer do you know that’s gonna do a blog with you? That’s when I think everything got messed up. That blog fucked it up. You know I’m always in trouble. When I have a case, I don’t do no press, nothing. If you don’t got a lawyer there telling you, ‘Shut the fuck up,’ you’re fucked up. The lawyer was wack. Your lawyer wants to sit there and do a blog with you? Max’s lawyer may not have been the one to handle a homicide.”

Saluti met Max a couple of years ago as part of the legal team Jim Jones provided for Max, who is an estranged member of Jones’ Byrd Gang. Saluti eventually took the reins and said he would rep B for free.

The lawyer fumed when he was told of Yayo’s comments.

“My first comment is, who the hell is Tony Yayo and what law school did he go to?” Saluti said. “Everything I do, I do for a reason. And where were all these people in support of Max — like Tony Yayo and all these other people that have something to say — when he was out there by himself facing all of these charges? Nowhere to be seen. Now everyone has an opinion about it. Everyone wants to help Max. I saw people were bustin’ my chops about blogging while we were waiting for a verdict in this case … on my Twitter. Do people actually think I touch my own Twitter and it’s not my assistant? You think I have time to Twitter?

“What year did Yayo graduate from law school is my question,” Saluti added. “How many cases has he tried to verdict? It’s ridiculous. People are so ready to kick a guy when he’s down. Not that I’m saying Max and I are down, because we damn sure aren’t done fighting this.”

In the wake of Max’s conviction, Saluti appeared in an online video and read a letter from his client thanking fans for their support. Max also said in his letter he wouldn’t trade Saluti for the world, even if the late, great Johnnie Cochran “rose from the dead.” The attorney said he’s in the middle of filing a motion to get the case thrown out altogether.

“My daughter came to me at the end of the case, and she said, ‘Daddy, you lost? But you worked so hard on that case. You don’t lose. How could you lose?’ ” Saluti recalled. “And I told her, ‘That’s just the way God wants it right now.’ That was my answer, and that’s still my answer. Max is supposed to be the godfather to my 1-year-old, who we were gonna baptize after the trial. And I said to him after the trial, ‘Water is not touching that kid’s head until you are out the hole.’ And I don’t expect that to be 30 years from now. He was strong, you have to admit. I think I was more upset than he was. I really do.

“I went and saw Max in jail the next day, after the verdict, and he wrote a letter to his fans specifically, and when I read it, I choked back tears,” the lawyer added. “I love that boy. I held his son in my arms. I have pictures of his son and my son together.”

Kelis’ Demands Spousal Support From Nas

Kelis is asking the judge to order Nas to pay spousal support, child support, all pregnancy-related expenses, and one-half of all medical expenses after the child is born. She also wants $3,500 for the baby nurse after the child’s birth, and $20,000 for strollers, cribs and other baby supplies.

Kelis claims estranged hubby Nas has left her high and dry not offering her a penny in the wake of her impending birth and she says she's broke "I have run out of money."
Kelis filed legal papers claiming Nas isn't paying her support, pre-natal expenses -- nothing, even though she claims he is filthy rich.
Kelis says, "My survival is based on [Nas'] will at this time. If he does not want to pay for an expense, it does not get paid." The couple was married in 2003. The baby is due this month.
Kelis says she’s entitled to maintain the lifestyle to which she became accustomed during their marriage — they have five homes, fly first class, go to fancy restaurants, and on and on. My engagement ring is an approximately nine-carat cushion-cut diamond solitaire.

Remy Ma's Letter From Jail

I always find myself thinking about what I was doing a year ago, two years ago, five years ago today. I never remember exactly where till I find myself imagining where I would be today. I rarely listen to the radio because it's sort of depressing. Not being able to record is stressful not because I'm a rapper but because that was my way of venting and expressing myself. So I write a lot! So much that now I have a callous on my finger from holding a pen. I guess I got used to texting my rhymes!

I get a lot of fan mail and everyone asks me how I'm doing? I say fine, the way I see it I never imagined making it this far with my sanity. Not being able to go somewhere when you want, see your family when you want (on many occasions when you need to), can't use the phone, take a shower, wear clothes, or even eat when you want - super aggravating. Whenever, which is almost everyday I get visits, a lot of kids ask for autographs. It's something that I used to do almost everyday but now it actually feels weird, I really feel like an inmate. And as much as I hate to admit it, I really am an inmate. I mean, it kind of grows on you when certain people go out of there way to make you feel like that.

They have this program called YAP (Youth Assistance Program) they keep asking me to join. It's a program that brings inner city kids to the prison to show them what it's like to be incarcerated. I hear that every group asks about me but I'm a little hesitant to join. They think it will give the kids a reality check that this can happen to anyone. I however feel that it'll be more of the kids wanting to see Remy Ma the rapper and because of that they won't get that I'm actually in jail. So I'm still contemplating. If I figure out a way for them to actually get it, that this is really not a place you would ever want to be whether for 8 years, 8 months, or 8 minutes then I'll do it.

Everyone in prison isn't innocent but everyone in prison isn't guilty. So whether you end up here on purpose or by accident, the pain you're feeling is still the same. And I can quote a lot "gangsters" by saying that "I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy..."

Forever Innocent,
Rem

Lloyd Banks Talks Album, Young Buck & Lil Wayne

Recently, G-Unit rapper Lloyd Banks opened up to HipHopDX about several subjects, including why it has taken him three years to put out a new album.

"A lot of people don’t know…I went through a lot of stuff that year with my father passing, my mom had heart attacks back-to-back," said Banks of his time spent since his last album, Rotten Apple [click to read]. "This is while I was actually home. I was supposed to be doing promos and things of that nature. Literally, I was out of the mix for about six months. Then around the time that [50 Cent’s] 'I Get Money' came out, I was back in the mix. And a lot of people don’t know, I haven’t been on Interscope since that last album, since about the beginning of 2008. I’ve really just been sitting and waiting. This is 50’s last album requirement, so I got a lot of things coming to the table, and I don’t want to miss the boat. There’s really nothing to rush about, especially when I felt bamboozled. I still felt like everyone was still hating. It’s too late to hate, it’s time to get over that. I just wanted to sit back and analyze for a minute and not rush things. Now, I’m coming back full circle, and I had to put together a game plan."

Lloyd Banks also spoke on the topic of ousted G-Unit member Young Buck:

"Buck handled it completely wrong. He went vocal with things in the public that wasn’t ironed out," explained Banks about the falling out beteen Young Buck and 50 Cent. "It just showed signs of being ungrateful. That’s the way 50 took it. Somebody who’s extended their hand to you so much, and for you to show direct negligence out in the public, and you say, 'Fuck G-Unit,' what do you expect to come from that?"

"I never understood why that was so hard for him to understand," continued Banks. "50’s stated that he’s paid this man’s taxes for the past two years! You owe a man a quarter-million dollars, and you say fuck him on stage, at that point what do you expect to happen? This is what I’m saying: everybody hears the shot, but nobody hears the smack! What happened to the smack in the face of G-Unit?"

The G-Unit lyricist, crowned Mixtape Artist of the Year in 2004, also said that he appreciated Lil Wayne's mixtape grind, and that it inspired him to get back into that mode. "I would lie to say it doesn’t. You need something – it’s right there plain in your face. I always felt like that was the formula, like that was the structure I needed to be successful. It’s just like the record label looks at it like you’re over-saturating. They don’t understand the freestyle. They don’t make any money off of the freestyle. Anything that they don’t make money off of, it doesn’t make sense. That’s why I had to get away from it. You can’t tell me this shit doesn’t make sense when this is what got me sittin’ in your office. We’ve done it! We’ve made it possible for Wayne to understand that formula, and he took it and ran with it! It’s time for me to take it and run with it also, and be fully dominant in that market."

As for future plans, Lloyd Banks indicated that he will eventually pursue acting, but is first interested in devoting his time to music.

50 Cent Is Dropping An LP Next Week

50 Cent recently spoke to MTV News about it:

The G-Unit General is putting out a project of all-new material called War Angel LP on Tuesday via ThisIs50.com. He says it’s more like a street album than a mixtape. Fif — who’s in L.A. right now recording Before I Self Destruct with Timbaland and Polow Da Don — said he’s throwing heat rocks all summer long, then dropping his official LP in September (dare we dream he drops the same day as Jay?).

“You know what it is, it’s a conflict,” Fif described. “The exact opposite. I didn’t want to write Angel Demon. It’s not the contrast between good and bad. But … if someone’s at war, I’m sure they’re saying their prayers. They believe they have angels around them. What would you call an angel around a soldier at war?”

“That’s why I titled it that,” he added. “Creatively, this is not even a mixtape. That’s why I put LP next to it. … My core audience will understand it immediately, and it’s written specifically for that.” [...]

“It’s not a specific target, a specific person, I’m writing about,” he clarified. “When you hear it, out of all the material I put on the street, you’re gonna say that’s the best body of work I put out in the mixtape circuit, period. The way the mood of music is right now, when they hear what this is, they’ll say, ‘That’s what we needed.’ “
More 50 Cent underground releases will follow in just a few short weeks.

“I have two other tapes to follow it,” he revealed. “Fourth of July, Sincerely Southside Part 2 coming out with mostly ’90s music on it. Timeless music, classic hit records. Then, after that, there’s a G-Unit mixtape. It’s actually untitled. I’ll be finished with it in the next day or so.”
